Late 19th or early 20th century high-necked nightgown - Italian
This is a cotton nightgown from the late 19th or early 20th century, and it comes from Italy. The neckline on this nightgown is seriously amazing - the front is a side-fastening placket that has been minutely pleated, it does up at one side of the neck with tiny buttons and handmade button-loops, and is finished with handembroidered trim and ruffle collar. The cuffs have the same handembroidered ruffle trim. At some point someone added a tapestry ribbon to the edge of the hem - perhaps this was when it was made, perhaps it was added later.
This is in excellent condition. Despite the voluminous lower skirt, the neck is very fitted and needs to go on someone finely built for full effect, although personally I wouldn’t wear it fully done-up. I think it would be reasonable to alter the lower part to turn this into a dress, as I cannot see anyone wearing it as a nightgown- but prove me wrong!. It measures 50cm from armpit to armpit lying flat and is 118cm long.
