Antique handwoven hemp blanket - probably Eastern European
The is a beautiful handspun and handwoven hemp blanket or throw with coloured threads woven into borders at either end. I don’t know where this comes from originally, but the quality of the handspun and handwoven hemp fabric plus the bright colours and the border weaving suggests Eastern Europe more than France, and if I had to hazard a guess I would say either Hungary or Ukraine. This has been pieced together from three panels of hemp which were purpose woven for this piece - the textile is truly beautiful. The stitching used to join the pieces is quite beautiful and was meant to be decorative. It is overall in good condition - it has a small series of pink ink marks to one end and a darker stain which is visible in the photo of the entire piece, plus it also has one small mothhole, also pictured. Otherwise it is excellent. It is probably early 20th century. It measures 111×154xm.
