Super-stylish 1950's or 60's duster coat/coverall
Dating from the mid-50’s to mid-60’s, this overall/dust coat is made of a thick cotton twill canvas in a medium blue colour. The cut is just amazing, like the best overcoat, with deep shaped pockets and button-straps with a choice of two buttons on each sleeve, to allow the cuffs to be cinched in tight. It once had a belt but this has gone elsewhere, it does however have beltloops and when belted in it has a fabulous shape (its sister, in better shape, still has her belt and is in another listing - she is sold but I will leave the listing up so you can see)
. These sorts of garments were worn by all sorts of professions, from mechanics to butchers to people working in dairy. Like all French workwear, this is not only beautifully cut but beautifully made - each buttonhole with its own pocket in the button placket to assist in taking the strain when heavy items are lifted, and all pockets and the back gusset reinforced at stress-points. The beautifully-shaped collar was made to turn up in bad weather or when working in dirty conditions.
This has some wear and small holes, notably a small hole to one side of a lapel along with two visible repairs, an three tiny moth-holes near the back hem. It is tagged a size 52, which is quite large, but please go on the measurements that follow:
Lying flat, the measurement across the chest from armpit to armpit is 62cm. From shoulder seam to seam across the back of the neck is 47cm. From the shoulder seam to the cuff measured along the top of the arm is 60cm. It is 108cm long. Please note that I have successfully had a very similar jacket altered at the shoulders to narrow them, a good tailor will be able to easily do this as it is not lined.
