Huge piece of exceptionally beautiful and unusually wide teatowel linen

€240.00

I’ve not come across another piece like this, and so I can’t date it with any degree of certainty but I would say pre-WW2. This is teatowel fabric, and it is an unusual linen and cotton mètis - unusual because the linen is raw and quite loosely spun, leaving the end product a beautiful natural linen colour, the textile slightly slubbed and flecked with stalk waste. Probably when it was first manufactured it was aimed at a poor country market, but now it is so unusual and so much more beautiful than most of the antique teatowel fabric I find.

It’s also exceptionally wide - usually teatowel fabric is about 52cm wide, this one is 64cm.

There is an enormous amount here, 11.9 metres in total. I won’t be cutting it into metre lengths, it will either sell as a big piece or it will get repossessed into my hoard of fabrics, but it is too beautiful and too unusual to be cut up into smaller pieces. It could be used to cover furniture with!

It’s in excellent physical condition. Most of the length is also unmarked, but one end has storage marks - quite a big storage mark that is about 50cm long, and then some. smatterings of discolouration. My experience is that these marks will soak and wash out with a good long soak (24-48 hours) in a mild solution of percarbonate soda and gentle washing detergent, and then a hot wash.
