Early 19th century notaire's manuscript
This single page manuscript is from a solicitor’s office, in which France abounds, and dates from around 1820. There is no date on this one, but the single stamp and its imprinted watermark date from somewhere between 1820-1830. It’s a very beautiful page of extreme mundaneness, outlining an agreement between a couple who own a mill in the Vendée to pay something in instalments to a M.Henri Charlenay, probably the purchase of more land (it usually is!)
I love that down one side at right angles the notaire has written a provisional list of costs. Notaires love provisional lists of costs. You should see the one attached to my house. I wish it was written in such beautiful handwriting, I’d frame it.
This measures 17.5x25cm.
