This garment has been cut and sewn in a way which probably hasn’t changed for almost a thousand years. This is a work smock - made to slip on over other clothing to protect them, hence the slit neck for ease of pulling on and off. It is made from a plain linen and cotton métis, which is very soft, and has been entirely handstitched. It is in excellent condition. On one of the sleeves there is a little hand-stitched circular repair, and on the lower front a very small scattering of rust marks, but it is otherwise perfect. It measures 61cm from armpit to armpit lying flat across the front of the body, and is 107cm long. The arms are 24cm wide lying flat where they join the body, including the underarm gusset, and 17.5cm lying flat further along the arm, so 35cm around the upper arm. This is a very wearable example.
