Pure linen centre-stitched sheet with initials RM

€105.00

This sheet is from the first half of the 20th century and has been made out of two panels of machine-woven unbleached linen stitched together by hand. Before about 1960, most linen looms were unable to weave larger widths due to issues with the tension of the linen thread (before mechanical looms, linen was often woven in humid cool areas to keep the thread damp and supple - a reminder of why linen and all baste fibres absolutely should never be tumble-dried!) and so sheets from the first half of the 20th century, if they were machine-woven, would be stitched out of two panels of narrower fabric. This one has a wide handmade wrapped ladder border and a large central pair of initials RM. The linen is medium-heavy, drapey and smooth, and the colour makes a wonderful contrast to the white of the embroidery and ladder border. These make also wonderful throws. The sheet is in perfect condition and measures 234×295cm.
