Amazing 1930's artificial silk satin fabric from a costuming atelier - Saffron gold colour - priced per metre
This fabric is one of a number of rolls of textile that came from a tailoring atelier that specialised in making costumes for the Opéra de Tours (which if you are ever in Tours is a very beautiful building and sits opposite a corner bar that still has all its original 1930’s fittings). It is artificial silk - that is - rayon, but it was known as ‘soie artificielle’ at the time. Unlike modern rayon, much rayon from the first half of the 20th century was very beautiful, and very strong, and this is the case with these rolls, which are the best quality rayon fabrics I have ever handled. This roll is probably 1930’s, certainly not much later, and is a satin-weave, in a beautiful bronze colour. It is like liquid metal in the way it handles, with a beautiful heavy drape and a deep shimmer. It is a deep saffron gold colour, from a distance it looks like molten gold. There are occasional very minor imperfections in the weave, this is not damage, it is just reflective of the weaving capabilities at the time. It is strong and beautiful and perfect - just be aware that this was for speciality or evening wear and it will demand care to keep it in good condition, exactly the same sort of care as you would with a silk of the same weight, drape and weave.
It measures 135cm wide. I am selling it priced per metre with a minimum cut of two metres. I cannot unroll the entire roll to state how much there is - a medium amount I would say compared to the size probably was before it was used. If you want all of it there would be a slight reduction, but take the pricing per metre as a guide and please contact me to discuss.
