I bought this from a seller at a professional market - she had come across from the easternmost region of Alsace, on the border with Germany. This is a very old shirt and it is made from handspun and handwoven hemp. The style is utterly unlike the pieces I find in my region, it is wider and shorter, but what is most remarkable are the handmade hemp-thread buttons at the neck and sleeves and the hemp-thread stitched buttonholes. This is how buttons were made for centuries by people who could not afford to buy them. Despite being so old, this shirt is in excellent condition. There are a couple of tiny rust marks on the left-hand front of the shirt - I have pictured these. It is really a remarkable garment. It measures 64cm from armpit to armpit lying flat, 54cm from shoulder seam to seam across the back of the neck, the sleeves are 47cm from the shoulder seam to the edge of the cuff along the top of the sleeve, and it is 85cm long at the front and 92cm long at the back. It is very wearable.
