A very beautiful example of the incredible skills of interior fittings artisans working in France from the 18th century onwards, this is an element of what must have once been a magnificent chandelier from a very wealthy house. This is a large, quite heavy, 3-dimensional sculpture of a winged slightly gryphon-like dragon. Every single detail on this, all the fur and feathers, has been modelled and cast and then carefully ground out and detailed by specialized craftsmen - pieces like this weren’t just cast and then polished up - there is a lot of work in this piece. In fantastic condition because it was cast in the best quality of golden brass which has lost none of its lustre over the past 140+ years, this piece measures 21cm at the longest and also at the highest point. It has no bolts or screws, it would have slotted into the rest of the chandelier and so it stands as a little sculpture in its own right. It would look magnificent fixed to a wall or above a doorway.
