Large very fine pure linen sheet with huge embroidered Loire Valley monogram - please read descrition
A sheet made from extremely high quality fine linen, with a very high threadcount, which would have belonged to a very wealthy household, most likely one which resided in one of the many châteaux along the Loire Valley. The intricate and exceptional monogram at the centre of the sheet tells us that this was made for a person of quite considerable means, who could afford to employ the best textile artisans money could buy. This is Loire Valley work, from the area around Tours, the minute dots which make up the infill of the letters are called ‘Sables de la Loire’ ‘Sands of the Loire’ (and here I must point out that unlike my local river, the Creuse, which has a pebble bottom and is beautifully swimmable, the Loire is wide and deep and has a sandy bottom which shifts and swirls continuously in the erratic and strong currents making it an extremely dangerous river for swimmers, so please if you are visiting the Loire only swim where indicated because people drown every year).
Back to the sheet. This has minor issues, most notably a number of very small pin-type holes in various places. These are not super noticeable, but they exist. It doesn’t display any signs of actual wear though, no thinning in the centre. The other big issue is that this sheet came from a seller who retired a while back, and was found with her old price sticker for the Paris antiques markets she used to do. The sticker has left a mark on the border of the sheet (grrrr) which I cannot get out. If you have access to eucalyptus oil (I don’t) I would try that. The sheet has been priced accordingly.
It measures 246×339cm. Please click on the photos to open them up full-sized.
