These are fine handspun farmhouse linen from the mid to late 19th century, and were probably woven to be farmhouse serviettes - the size and the raised weft stripes at either end indicate this - but they are so large compared to modern serviettes that they are more like tray cloths or very large kitchen cloths. They both came from the same household, and they are exquisite. One is slightly finer than the other, and a warmer colour, with a little initial L in one corner - this one has a tiny wear and a very small stain (both pictured), the other paler one is perfect. They both have handrolled and stitched hems. The ‘L’ cloth measures 74×105cm, the lighter cloth is 77×97cm.
