From somewhere in the first half of the 20th century, most likely 1930’s or 40’s, this is a huge piece of mattress ticking that has been unpicked from a mattress. This is a sturdy but dense and fine herringbone twill-woven cotton canvas, the ground colour is a very pale eau-de-nil, but it is the stripes in in red, orange, yellow, black, cream and shades of pink that are just magnificent, they have been woven in such careful gradations that the whole gives an effect of stunning dégradé which I see on very few of these pieces. This has, as mentioned above, been removed from a mattress and it has small damages and marks, but nothing major - the vast expanse of the textile is good and sturdy. This would make such wonderful cushions or similar, making maximum use of those stunning stripes. It is 140cm wide and 405cm long.
