A 19th century hemp sheet, made from two panels of handspun and woven farmhouse hemp stitched together with hemp thread, with little initials BD in one corner and delicate handrolled hems. This is a gorgeous example, it is textured and dense and heavy, and if you look at the photos you will see the pale striped effect in the weave made by the weaver using slightly different weights of handspun yarn. Perhaps the different bobbins of yarn came from different fields, or different years, or were spun by different people, because these sheets are a remarkable memory of land and time and place and people from 130+ years ago. Hemp for textile had all but disappeared in France by the 1930’s.
This is in superb condition given its age. It has been used and washed but there is very little wear. The reverse side is slightly darker than the top side - it would have been laid to dry flat in a field and the sun has slightly bleached out the original oatmeal colour. It has two small marks which I have pictured towards one end - but other than these it is perfect.
These sheets make wonderful throws for sofas and also summer blankets, with another finer linen sheet underneath they are the right weight to keep you cool but still stop you getting chilled at 4am in the morning with the fan running.
This measures 197cm wide ×275cm long, which is considerably longer than many of these peasant hemp sheets.
To purchase, please message me and include the title of the listing so that I know which piece you are referring to as it doesn’t automatically transfer with the message.
