This is a bolster cover, for the type of pillow used right up until the middle of last century by many people in the French countryside (when I moved into my current house, the beds with their woollen mattresses were still in-situ and at one end of each of them was a feather-filled bolster cushion). This one is made out of handspun and handwoven hemp - one side is plain and the other opens with a hemmed slit in the centre to allow the bolster to be inserted or removed. This piece is in excellend condition, no damage, no wear and no stains. There is a little pair of cross-stitched initials BB at the lower edge of the opening. It measures 45×112cm.
