From sometime in the 19th century comes this beautiful handspun and handwoven hemp tablecloth, which originates from the Vendée or from the Sarthe, and which is slightly larger than is often usual for these types of tablecloths. This is a farmhouse or vineyard tablecloth, made by and for home use in a peasant household. It has raised-weft stripes made by weaving thicker threads into the weft at either end, and very delicate rolled hems which can only be appreciated fully if you have ever tried to work with brand-new old hemp fabric, it is thick and tough and producing hems of this delicacy required skill.
This piece has been worn and used, but because it is hemp this has made it even more beautiful. Repeated washings have bleached the original colour, which would have been a shade of flecked oatmeal, to a creamy white, and have taken the once stiff fabric and given it a beautiful drape. There are a few small marks on it, most notably along the edges where it appears to have once been tacked to something. Hemp of this age and this wear is truly beautiful. It mesures 113cm wide by 190cm long.
