A beautiful handspun and handwoven hemp sheet with little initials BD in one corner. This has been made, like all of these sheets, from two handspun panels the width of a loom, handstitched together to make a larger sheet. It has handstitched hems. This is peasant textile, it would most likely have been made by the same farmhouse that grew the hemp, although the weaving could have been done by seasonal itinerant weavers. This piece has been lightly used and washed and the original deep oatmeal colour of new hemp has faded a little. This is a beautiful texture and has delicate seams and hems. At some point in its life it was folded up and sat on something damp, and then developed mould stains. That mould was gone long before I got my hands on it but those stains will not come out. - it has been soaked and washed like all my pieces. If this was mine I would sew a large patch of something very beautiful over that section and pretend it was always there! Other than that, this is an absolutely beautiful piece of cloth and slightly larger than many of these sheets.
It measures 200×269cm.
These sheets make beautiful throws, or pair them up with a fine linen sheet and use them as a light breathable blanket during the summer months
