An exquisite late 19th or early 20th century cotton bedjacket initials MB
A very beautiful garment, and a very rare one. This is a flowing bedjacket with embroidered collar and angel-wing sleeves made from a very fine cotton piqué that has a raised design that looks a little like tiny cherries. The front is seemingly quite plain, but the back has three large box pleats which would have made this sit extremely gracefully and lent an elegance to the backview of whomever was wearing it. This is very much a boudoir piece that would have been worn over a fine negligée, and its exquisite make, cut and extensive delicate embroidery point to it belonging to someone quite well-off. It does up at the front with large carved mother-of-pearl buttons.
This was found in a trunk with a number of other exceptionally fine pieces of underwear, which will also be up shortly. It appears to have been very little used, it is in extremely good condition. It has a couple of tiny marks, and two very small damages - all of these issues stem from its storage and from being left in contact with something metallic, probably a pin, for over 100 years. For its age it is practically perfect. The style of the hand-embroidered initials point to this being from sometime between 1890-1910, it is very much a garment of the Belle Époque.
Buttoned up and lying flat it measures 58cm from armpit to armpit and is 89cm long.
