This little piece is a perfect example of exactly how beautiful handwoven hemp can be. It is from the Vendée and it is handspun and woven peasant hemp. It has been very little-used, if at all, and so remains in a similar state to how it came off the loom. Like most of the peasant tablecloths and kitchen linens from the central and northwestern regions of France, it has raised weft stripes at either end. There are no physical faults. It has some storage marks which didn’t come out when I soaked and washed it - but I don’t use harsh cleaning products as they damage the fibres of the textile and I think that these will fade even more over time if it is washed gentle in pure soap and dried in the sunlight. It measures 81×142cm.
