Early 20th century men's cotton shirt with little embroidered flowers on the bib

sold out

From probably around 1920, this is an exquisite shirt made in very good quality soft thick cotton with hand-embroidered flowers on the bib. It was originally made for someone quite well-off - it has a shaped front tab for buttoning onto the inside of a pair of high-waisted dress pants to keep the front (which would have been heavily starched) flat and uncrumpled. On this tab are the hand-embroidered initials of the owner, JV, and on the reverse is a beautiful little label for the maker which says it was made by the Chemiserie Chauvin in Niort in the centre west of France. This has some small issues - a small tear at the shoulder and at the bottom front would benefit from some attention. It has been soaked and washed but there rest some very pale marks - these re barely noticeable when it is being worn but they are there (see the final three photos). Although this was a dress shirt, made to be worn with shirt studs and cufflinks, at some point someone has stitched plastic buttons to the front and cuffs. These work very well! It measures 61cm from armpit to armpit lying flat across the front, 42cm from shoulder seam to seam across the back of the neck, 63cm from shoulder seam to edge of cuff along the top of the sleeve, and is 93cm long at the front and 98cm long at the back.
