Early 20th century handstitched cotton petticoat with delicate embroidery - slightly larger size
This beautiful garment comes from around 1910-1920 - and has probably never been used. It belonged to someone quite well-off, the quality of the embroidery and the little monogram at the front attest to this, and perhaps they had multiples and never got around to wearing this one! A simple shape, it has a wide neckline and large arm-openings with very delicate hand-embroidery and scalloping along all the edges. The oval-shaped slits near the embroidery would have had ribbons threaded through to pull the garment into a gather - this is how it was shaped to the body. It has been entirely handstitched and the stitching is so beautiful - see the photo. In almost perfect condition, there is a small rust mark at one shoulder and another miniscule mark at the hemline but no physical damage. It measures 60cm from armpit to armpit and is 96cm long.
