A pair of extraordinary beaded panels in very fine glass beads, late 19th-early 20th centuries

€95.00
Sold

This pair of beaded panels was most probably intended to be made into tiny evening bags such as was popular from the 1890’s to the 1920’s. They were found with several evening bag frames. This is probably 1900 or just before. The beading is worked on a deep aqua silk background, and the basting stitches used to line up and hold the panels together are still in place. The beads used are absolutely tiny, in colours of cream, pink, coral, butter, and true metallic gold, whilst the centre is worked in longer glass beads which match the silk background, interspersed with gold. I’ve never seen beadwork quite so delicate nor in such good condition. The beading itself is perfect. The silk background has slightly split in places around the edges, but there is no damage to the silk backing the beaded panels. The panels themselves measure 11.6×16.3cm each, the silk backing is 17.5×22cm.
