From the easternmost region of France, Alscace, which shares its border with Germany, this is a very traditional peasant pillowcase made from handwoven linen and cotton métis in a red check pattern on one side and a part of the reverse side, with a plain linen métis backing. It most likely dates from around 1920-30. Entirely handstitched, it has two pairs of cotton tie tapes at the opening to hold the pillow in, and just below those are the hand- chain-stitched initials CG. The front is in perfect condition and the red is a beautiful bright colour. On the reverse cream backing fabric there are two stains, one of them is quite large, but would not be seen at all when this is on a bed or a chair with the right side out. It measures 72×83cm.
