A lovely smaller example of a peasant sheet, this one in a handspun and handwoven hemp and cotton métis. Like all of these sheets this one is in two panels stitched by hand into a larger piece of cloth, with delicate handstitched hems. These hemp and cotton handwoven sheets are quite rare in my experience - cotton would have come into France from its colonies or from the cotton farms of the southern United States, and then handspun by whomever made this sheet, and added to farmgrown French hemp. It’s a strange anomalous textile document. This one is in nearly perfect condition and has been little used. It has just two marks near one of the corners, which I have photographed. It measures 192x249cm. These make wonderful sofa throws or light summer blankets, paired with a finer sheet beneath.
