As I’ve written about several times, in the fairly recent past, there used to be many more strains of textile hemp species than there are today in France. There was Turkish hemp, Russian hemp, all sorts of other types, and some of them produced very fine fibres. This pair of teatowels are 19th century, and must have been made from one of these finer strains, or otherwise was spun by a very experienced and precise spinner. They are very fine compared to the vast majority of handspun hemp textile, and they have retained their beautiful speckled oatmeal colour, one is paler than the other. Handrolled and stitched hems and cotton hook tapes at either end of both towels. They both have the initials HG in one corner. These are in very good condition. There is a tiny thinning near the top edge of the paler piece, and a couple of tiny marks, but otherwise they are excellent. They measure 68×106cm (the lighter one) and 65×104cm (darker).
