A set of three very large 19th century handwoven kitchen cloths, initials CG

€110.00

This set is a stunning example of 19th century handwoven farmhouse linen. Made from a quite fine handspun and handwoven linen with raised weft threads at either end, created by dropping thicker threads into the weft as the cloth is woven. They have beautiful tiny rolled handstitched hems. These may very well have been a serviette, as serviettes were exceptionally large in the mid-19th century, especially in more well-to-do households. My guess is that these cloth came from a wealthy farm or an estate farm. Each has initials CG embroidered in cross-stitch in one corner, and two of them have additonally a small cross in red. Two are in perfect condition, probably never-used, the third has been used but is also perfect. The two unused pieces are 73×108cm, the other is 72×112cm.
