19th century twill-weave handwoven hemp tablecloth, from southern France

€95.00

This piece comes from the region around Toulouse in southwestern France, historically one of the big centres of hemp (and woad!) production in France. The weave and the colour of the hemp is very indicative to this region - plus I know the seller and where they live! I am still unsure as to whether these are tablecloths or bathtowels, they could be either, but I am inclined to believe they are tablecloths simply because the size matches pieces I am sure are tablecloths from regions further north, and also because bathing yourself in water as a 19th century French peasant was not a common experience and you probably wouldn’t have had a dedicated towel for it!

This is in excellent strong condition. It has a beautiful texture and handrolled hems. It measures 94×160cm.
