This beautiful piece of fabric is either from Eastern France, or from over the border into Germany or further afield into Eastern Europe. It’s hard for me to pinpoint because in any case many European borders have been fluid for centuries and the easternmost part of France has changed shape many times.
This is handwoven hemp, and the red stripes are made with machine-spun cotton yarn, but they are handwoven into the piece (yes, handweavers were easily able to manage such fine thread!). It has a handcrocheted trim all around the edges. This is in excellent condition, and is very beautiful. It just has a couple of very small rust-like stains in one corner. It measures 97×143cm.
