This beautiful piece of fabric is either from Eastern France, or from over the border into Germany or further afield into Eastern Europe. It’s hard for me to pinpoint because in any case many European borders have been fluid for centuries and the easternmost part of France has changed shape many times.
This is a bolster cover for a long pillow, the sort used all over Europe in peasant households. It looks and feels to me as though one side is handwoven hemp and the other is handwoven linen. The contrast in colour between the two different textiles used for the front and the back of this piece make it extra-beautiful. The front has woven red stripes, which are machine cotton yarn, but the weaving is amazing, it’s also by hand. The whole cover has been hand-stitched in linen thread and has two ties at the lip to close it. It is perfect for its age - I am guessing this is around 1920-30. It measures 44×105cm.
