This linen sheet is so incredibly beautiful. It is a handspun and handwoven linen number, and I would hazard a guess, judging from the beauty and fineness of the peasant linen, that it very probably could have been spun and woven by nuns, because it was certainly spun and woven for a religious order, and given that it is peasant country linen and not super fine rich person linen, and also that many religious orders in France did (and still do) grow and make just about everything they use, it is not out of the realms of possibility. The little hand-stitched cross above the initials in one corner is the indication that this was for the use of either nuns or monks.
This is a very old piece, I can tell from the quality of the weave, but also from its durability. It is worn, but has worn so beautifully, it is like a drapey soft plush toy in its texture. There is no physical damage, apart from the wear, it is perfect. I wouldn’t even say apart from the wear, as it is the wear which has created the beautiful texture.
