A beautiful example of a handwoven hemp sheet, this piece comes from an ancient farmhouse in the Vienne, in the Centre-Val-du-Loire region of France. It is made, as all these sheets are, from two panels of handspun and handwoven hemp, stitched together with hemp or linen thread. It is quite finely spun and woven for one of these sheets, and you can see the slight variations in the thickness of the handspun thread which show up as textural striations in the weave. This has been lightly used, and the original wheat colour of new hemp has faded to a creamy soft oatmeal - one side is less faded than the other because these would have been dried in the sun by being laid right-side-up in a meadow, and the sun has bleached some of the colour out. But it is in perfect condition. I have soaked and washed it. It is also slightly larger than many of these sheets, measuring 223×253cm.
These sheets make beautiful sofa throws, and are also the perfect weight for using as a top-sheet during hot summer nights as they will breathe and keep you cool in the first part of the night but still provide enough warmth so you don’t chill in the very early morning hours. Just add another finer linen or cotton sheet beneath.
Sometimes with these pieces I put a small caveat on them - please don’t buy this to cut up or dye. It is an integral document that is at least 130 years old. If you want textiles for making with, go follow my sale account on Instagram @lagrossetoiledeux which is where I put up damaged textiles for reuse.
