A very old handwoven hemp tablecloth, initials ES

€75.00

This is a vineyard tablecloth, made from handspun and handwoven hemp, with raised weft stripes made by adding thicker threads into the weft as it was woven. It is from somewhere in the 19th century, but I cannot pinpoint the date because these types of tablecloth can’t really be dated, being handwoven they defy any efforts to pin them down. I simply know that handwoven hemp as a texttile had pretty much disappeared by 1920. This is a beautiful cloth. It has been used and is worn, and its original oatmeal colour has faded to a creamy white. It is in good condition, but has some slight thinning in isolated areas. There is a stain near one of the handrolled hems. It measures 103×169cm.
