This is a very beautiful vineyard tablecloth, made from handspun and handwoven hemp, with raised weft stripes made by adding thicker threads into the weft as it was woven. It is from somewhere in the 19th century, but I cannot pinpoint the date because these types of tablecloth can’t really be dated, being handwoven they defy any efforts to pin them down. I simply know that handwoven hemp as a texttile had pretty much disappeared by 1920. This is a beautiful cloth, originally it would have been very stiff and tough, but many years of use have bleached its original oatmeal colour to a creamy white and have made it soft and drape-y. It is thicker and heavier than many of these pieces, even now after a century or more of use. It is in very good condition, just one small mark which I have pictured. It measures 115×188cm.
