A stunning 19th century handwoven linen smock initials CL

€95.00

This is a beautiful and very wearable garment, a work smock for wearing over other clothing, made from superb handspun and handwoven linen . I come across many examples of these sorts of garments but very few as beautiful or as wearable as this one. For starters, the arms on this are far wider than many of these pieces, and then it has this beautiful wide boat-neck which looks wonderful on. The textile it is made from is exceptional, relatively fine for this type of farmhouse linen, and so is the making itself, wholly hand-stitched, with a drawstring neckline. These are especially lovely lounge-garments, but wear it over jeans, or sleep in it - it’s a multipurpose garment, and provided it is cared for and washed gently and air-dried, it will last for many many years. There are no faults, marks or damages except that the cotton drawstring tape has worn through at some point. I never tighten these anyway (I own two similar pieces to this) but you could replace it if you wanted.

This measures 60cm from armpit to armpit lying flat across the front of the garment, and is 107cm long. The sleeves are 26cm lying flat where they join the body of the garment, including the underarm gusset, and 18cm along the arm, so 36cm around the upper arm.
