This plain handwoven hemp tablecloth with its raised weft stripes at either end dates from well into the 19th century, and is a perfect example of how use and washing have aged a piece of antique hemp into something truly beautiful. Hemp is such a tough fibre, often when it was first woven it was stiff and rough, and I have found unused 19th century pieces of hemp which would have been like a particularly tough canvas. Not all fresh hemp was like this, but it was all certainly very durable. How durable is shown by this tablecloth, which is at least 120 years old. Far from being damaged by use, the years and service have turned the once-stiff oatmeal-coloured textile into a soft, creamy, silky piece that falls and crumples in the most wonderful way. This is full of life and has many years of service ahead. No damage, no large marks, in absolutely perfect condition given its age, this measures 113×184cm. Please look at the photos to get an idea of its beauty.
