Large fragment of early 19th century silk brocade with metallic threadwork

€95.00

This large piece of magnificent silk brocade was quite possibly the front part of a religious garment - it is the sort of fabric that was often used for the sumptuous garments that priests would wear on feast days. It is probably earlier in the 19th century, it could even be late 18th, but it won’t be much later than around 1840. The thick figured silk ground displays a blooming garden of silk flowers in the most beautiful colours, and the leaves and details of these floral designs have been extensively filled out and picked up in real metal thread. This thread was made by a process of wrapping the finest of real metal filaments around a silk core, and for work such as this, only the finest of these metal threads was used.

This piece is mostly in good condition. There is some fragility around the edges and it seems to have been hacked from a larger garment (the aforementioned priestly garb?) but the central part of the panel is in very good condition and the colours are luminous. This is nevertheless not going to be a piece you can make into cushions, not unless they are for display only, silk of this age is too fragile to place under much pressure regardless of how well it has been stored.

This is an irregular shape but it measures roughly 67×89cm. It’s a little artwork.
