This is an exceptionally large tablecloth made from a medium-weight pure linen that has much the same weight and drape as a good quality sheet. The linen used is heavier than was often the case for such a large tablecloth, very clearly belonging to a well-to-do household who could afford a house with rooms large enough to accommodate a table of this size, and it falls and drapes beautifully. My small work table is not showing it to its full advantage!
It has an extensive large handworked cut-work interior border which has been very finely made - this is many days worth of work here - and has additionally a handmade ladder border (yet more work) running right the way around with mitred corners. At either end are the hand-embroidered initials LB.
This is in very good condition. There are two very tiny holes that I can find and have pictured, and a very small visible repair which I found when ironing and then couldn’t locate when it came to photographing - testimony I guess to how well it has been done. It is an exceptionally long tablecloth, measuring 172cm wide by 387cm long, almost one-and-a-half metres longer than the vast majority of the tablecloths I find. The price takes into consideration the tiny damages.
