Circa 1910, this nightdress is made from a very beautiful quality of lightweight pure linen. At the front it has small handembroidered motifs coupled with ladders of drawn-thread work, and embroidered initials ‘LA’. Around the neckline, the small hand-edged holes would have originally had a silk ribbon threaded through, allowing the neckline to be drawn tighter, as this is quite loose and tends to slip off the shoulders - alluring but impractical! Entirely made by hand with beautiful tiny hand-stitches, this is in almost perfect condition. The only fault is a small stain just at the top of the side gusset, which I have pictured and which is almost certainly ink. It measures 59cm from armpit to armpit lying flat, and is 119cm long.
