Gorgeous longer 19th century handwoven hemp sheet initials SC small marks (#3)

€130.00

Amongst the lot of exceptional hemp sheets I brought back several weeks ago, and which I am slowly soaking and washing and putting up on the website, there were a number with the initials SC. A couple of these SC sheets have never been used, or used very lightly, one of them was a métis of hemp and cotton. They are all different sizes, because despite belonging to the same family and household, they would have been made in different years. Textiles were part of a peasant’s small wealth, they were inherited when the owner died, and these SC sheets would have represented quite considerable effort to grow, spin and weave the fabric (and the cotton métis one would have been especially prized at the time - cotton was an exotic fibre).

This one has been made from two panels of handspun and handwoven pure hemp, and is a thicker weave than the other sheet from the same household I currently have up. It has been used lightly, but, being hemp, rather than wearing the sheet the use has simply softened it, one side is slightly faded from the original flecked oatmeal colour into a creamy textured piece on one side - you can see the contrast still with the wrong side which would have had less wear - the sheet also would have been dried layed out on a hedge or in a meadow with the right side up and the sun would have bleached it more than the reverse side. It has beautiful striations in the weave between the lighter and darker threads.

This is a very beautiful piece - they all are in their own way. It has a small mark which I have pictured, and at the bottom it has a very pale stain which is not showing up in photos and can barely be seen in any case - this is probably the side that was stored outermost when the sheet was put away in an armoire or chest. It is otherwise in perfect condition, very strong, and if looked after this piece will outlive you and you can will it to your own heirs! It measures 200×284cm.
