Vintage or antique Eastern European handwoven cotton runner
I don’t know enough about the textiles of Eastern Europe to pinpoint the origins of this piece exactly, nor do I know what it was for, whether simply decorative or with another purpose. I think this is from the Balkan region, and my guess is that it is a table-runner. I also think it dates from around 1930-40 - but this is based on how I obtained it rather than anything particular about the piece itself, which is traditional and therefore timeless. This is very long. The design is not embroidered but woven into the fabric, giving it these geometric shapes - it seems to feature a tree of life and a double-headed bird which a quick search says has been used as a traditional symbol in the Balkans for many hundreds of years.
This is in excellent condition. There is a small fray on one of the handstitched hems. The red is a little faded but it adds to the beauty of the piece. It measures 37×251cm.
