Late 19th century cotton nightdress with embroidery and letter 'M'
This nightdress is one of several (I will put the others up shortly) all of which are fairly identical. They all came from a well-to-do household in Tours, the capital of the Indre-et-Loire region. This is made from a good-quality cotton and has hand-embroidery at the front, neckline and cuffs, as well as a large embroidered ‘M’ at the bottom of the front opening. It does up with mother-of-pearl buttons. What is especially beautiful about this piece and its sisters is the cut. The maker has used fine pleats to draw the material in quite sharply at the bodice, but then has left the skirt to billow out. I think you could wear this as a dress. The fabric is in very good condition. Someone has patched the left-hand sleeve with two small patches (did it catch on something?) and there are some small marks such as the one pictured, and one or two very tiny wears but overall this is in very good condition. I have soaked and washed this.
It measures from 63cm armpit to armpit lying flat, 45cm from shoulder seam to seam across the back of the neck, and is 118cm long.
