These are beautiful linen and cotton damask kitchen or handtowels, woven in Germany probably around 1930. They have a ground ogf contrasting damask stripes and a border of lily-of-the-valley , plus a cotton hook tape at the top. They have been dyed a mid-blue colour using natural indigo (no hydrosulfite, ever). The indigo has picked up the damask patterning and the shininess of the linen thread. As with denim, it has also picked up the creases where the towels have been washed - this is a reflection of the qualities of the fibre rather than a fault of the indigo. These measure 45×103cm.
