Another hemp sheet from the incredible stash I found a couple of weeks back. I haven’t found hemp sheets like these since the first couple of years of this business. This comes from the Vienne region of France and has been made from two panels of handspun and handwoven hemp handstitched togethe . The weaving is precise and fine, and the different colours of the oatmeal hemp have created an impression of pale stripes running lengthwise whilst a slight difference in the thickness of the handspun thread has created thicker lines running crosswise. Finely-rolled hems at either end. This has hardly been used, the reverse side is a deep oatmeal colour, and there are flecks of stalk-waste in the weave. A textile not just from another century but from another entire time, this piece exists as a woven record of sun, rain, and soil made by people who lived very close to the earth. In perfect condition. This measures 194×260cm, which is longer than most of these sheets, generally they are around 230cm long.
