Unbleached linen sheet, probably never-used, initials PR (#11)

€95.00

This is a medium-weight densely-woven pure plain unbleached linen with handstitched hems and a little cross-stitched pair of initials in one corner ‘PR’. It is in superb unused condition. This is from a recent lot which came from a very large upper-middle-class household. The owner of this household was a successful notaire, which at the time was the equivalent of a solicitor. He must have come from money as well, one didn’t just become a notaire in those days.

This sheet is exactly the sort of sheet which would come from such a household. It is the absolute best quality machine-milled linen available at this period - the first half of the 20th century. Judging by the number of similar sheets I found with these initials, not to mention handwoven linen tablecloths and other pieces, it really was a very wealthy household.

I have soaked and washed this sheet and it has come up beautifully. Near one lower corner there is a very faint mark which is almost the same colour as the sheet, I have photographedf it, but it is hard to see. There is no physical damage. This measures 234×336cm.

At time of posting there are two of these sheets available.
