Pair of enormous lined vintage glazed chintz cotton curtains from Mario Buatta 'The Prince of Chintz'

€270.00

This pair of curtains are made from a very high-quality glazed cotton chintz, printed in a pattern that is recognizably taken from the ribbon and flower patterns of the late 18th century but translated into sunflower bright hues and pastels - a French friend remarked that they are Marie Antoinette on acid! The fabric comes from the production of Mario Buatta, nicknamed ‘The Prince of Chintz’, an Italian-American interior designer who died in 2018 in his 80’s. His client list included Elton John, Mariah Carey and Barbara Walters, and he was known for his colourful, crowded interiors, the total opposite of stark minimalism. When he died, his fabric production seems to have ceased, and so these really are unrepeatable curtains.

The bright clear bunches of flowers and red ribbons are set on a background of pale pastel blue and pink stripes. The quality of the print and the fabric is superb, and they have been properly made with a complete lining, handstitched hems, and pinch pleats. They are in very good condition, there is slight fading on one edge of each of the curtains, which I have pictured, and there is some yellowing to the lining but the front is still crisp, shiny, and clean. They need a good dry-clean and air, as they have been stored for a long time. I would date them to somewhere from the late 80’s to mid-90’s. They each measure 103cm along the pinch-pleated tops, 193cm wide along the bottom, and they are 312cm long. One of the curtains has a tiny rectangular cutout at the very top which must have been to make accommodation for a cornice, but this would not be noticeable when they are hung.
