A 19th century handspun and handwoven hemp sheet, relatively fine for these types of peasant sheets, handstitched together from two panels of fabric and with the initials BD cross-stitched into one corner. This is a beautiful sheet, slightly larger than many of these pieces, and it is in very good condition. You can see the striations of the weaving as yarns spun by different people or grown in different fields were woven in. This has been used and washed, and the original deep oatmeal colour has faded somewhat but it is still shot with darker threads. The damages are just along the centre, where the stitching holding the two panels of textile together has put strain on some of the threads, leading to several very small holes where a thread has become unravelled. There is another tiny hole at the very edge near one of the selvedges. I have photographed both of these faults. Other than these, this piece is in superb condition. These make wonderful sofa throws, or, with another lighter sheet underneath, they are also excellent summer-weight bedcovers.
