This cushion was probably made around 1930-50, judging from the tape press-studs used to close it, and whomwever made it did a beautiful job, it is completely handstitched and carefully finished. But the fabric used to make it is far older and dates from the very end of the 18th century or the first decade of the 19th. The colours are still vibrant and beautiful. This was obviously a cherished piece of fabric, there are multiple tiny little stitched repairs, delicate and beautiful in themselves, and one small section has almost been embroidered, but in quite a decorative and gentle way. I have gently soaked and washed this, there do remain some faint oxidisation marks, but given the age of the fabric and the fact that all the dyes used were natual plant-based dyes, I prefer to stop there and not risk the possibility of leaching the dyes or of damaging the 200yo cotton. This just needs a suitably-sized insert. It measures 37cm wide by 72cm long when closed up. Both sides have the same fabric.
