Enormous piece of late 19th or early 20th century pure linen made into a tablecloth

€180.00
Sold

This magnificent piece of linen is probably from the last decade of the 19th century or the first two decades of the 20th century. It is quite dense very creamy pure linen, a very long piece - fairly narrow because old mechanical looms couldn’t produce the right tension at larger widths at this point. These panels were often stitched down the centre to make sheets, I have several examples of sheets from this same era up now (with initials AB), and the quality of the linen is just superb.

Whomever owned this, and it was someone quite well-off, had it hand hemmed at either end probably to make an enormous plain tablecloth for a trestle table - perfect for outdoor dining. Their initials, whomever caused this to be made, were PA - stitched into one corner of the cloth.

This is in almost perfect condition, and seems to have been little used. But there is a hole at each end - possibly from snagging on said trestle-table when removed - as there is absolutely no signs of wear, damage or staining anywhere else.

With a little bit of patching this could once again become an enormous tablecloth - or it could be reused for curtains or something similar.

It measures 111cm wide by 553cm long.
