Very old complete mattress cover in red and yellow striped linen métis
From the early 20th century this is a complete box mattress cover made from a fine herringbone weave linen rich métis in red, cream, yellow, and natural linen-coloured stripes. The box edges have been bordered with a woven tape, and both sides have pairs of eyelets handworked at regular intervals, this was where thick linen thread would have been passed through the woolen batting which was used as mattress stuffing - essentially this was am easy-wash mattress cover in which the filling was not stitched down. This is in very good condition, the wear is almost all at the box sides of the cover, leaving large expanses of excellent unstained strong fabric across both sides. This colourway is so rare to come across in large pieces now. It measures 119cm wide by 186cm long times two because its’ a sack, not taking into account the box sides and top and bottom, which are approximately 14cm deep.
