Pure linen embroidered sheet and pillowcases set, initials RK - small damages
This is a lovely set in quite fine pure linen consisting of a larger sheet and a pair of matching pillowcases. All have a beautifully-worked hand-embroidered scalloped border - for the pillowcases it is all the way around, for the sheet it is along the top border. All have densely-embroidered initials RK - quite an unusual combination for a French person but it could be that the K represented the first name as frequently family names took precedence in the order (still do, on all public forms in France or when booking tickets, your family name comes first). These are in pretty good condition- the pillowcases are almost perfect, the only fault there is that one of the Atlantic mother-of-pearl buttons is missing. I know these are French-produced Atlantic mother-of-pearl because that gold colour is not dyed, it is natural and very unlike the translucent white of Asian mother-of-pearl buttons which began to be imported in large quantities from Vietnam and Japan from the 1920’s onwards.
The sheet has several small damages. There is a tiny hole which I have pictured. Where the scallop border meets the body of the sheet there is a small fray (people who are looking at this right now, I forgot to take a photo, I will rectify this shortly when I am in my studio), and finally there is a small tear on one side of the sheet where it looks like a weaving fault has weakened the fabric. Weaving faults were not unexpected in machine-milled linen, which this is - a handweaver would have picked up this fault as they were working. I have photographed this one. All of these issues are repairable and the sheet is still absolutely useable and beautiful. The set has been priced accordingly. The pillowcases measure 62×65cm at insert size and the sheet is 218×297cm.
